Trustee Roles and Responsiblities

Public library trusteeship assumes significant legal and civic responsibilities. The statutory authority for library boards in Utah is found in The Utah Code: Title 9-7-401 ff. for City Libraries and Title 9-7-501 ff. for County Libraries. Library board members take action as public officials when they make decisions on behalf of the library.

In addition to legal obligations, trustees assume critical responsibilities to plan and advocate for the improvement of library service. The work of the library board can be differentiated from the duties of the library director in the following areas.
