The Utah State Library Division (USL) has recently completed an extensive Strategic Plan for 2005-2009. The Strategic Plan has officially been approved by the Utah State Library Board November 18, 2004 and officially approved by the Utah Department of Community and Economic Development on November 29, 2004.
"This is the most inclusive plan the Library has ever undertaken," says State Librarian Donna Jones Morris. "The plan gives every staff member opportunities to focus on meeting the needs of library communities and serving Utah citizens."
The Strategic Plan process began in the summer of 2004 and began with the formulating of new Mission and Vision Statements. The USL Mission is brief but comprehensive: "The Mission of the Utah State Library is to Develop, Advance, and Promote library services and access to information."
The Vision Statement is more in-depth: "The Utah State Library (USL) works to provide equal access to information and library resources to all Utah residents by providing
- leadership and partnership with groups, organizations, and government entities with which we share common goals;
- library services for the blind and disabled;
- training and services for our customers,in their communities where they work and live, in the effective performance of their public responsibilities, and in the use of rich and diverse information technologies and resources;
- quality information resources to public library customers and state agencies via Public PIONEER;
- funding and organizational support for public, academic, school, and special libraries in Utah;
- bookmobile service for Utah's rural residents.
The USL strives to keep its services relevant and effective by assessing needs, planning responses, and evaluating results in a dynamic cycle."
"The Utah State Library has developed a most impressive strategic plan," says DCED Director of the Office of Planning Services Mark Bedel. "This plan is one that has set a standard for the entire Community and Economic Development Department."
