Cataloging
We will be working to make all our bookmobile libraries compliant with two important library standards for data. This will make it possible for your collection to be included in the new library automation system USL will be utilizing in the future.
You will need to have a MARC record for each title in your collection. You can copy MARC records from a variety of sources (including the Library of Congress) using the Z39.50 protocol. With Spectrum, this is simple.
Linda Roholt has prepared a step-by-step procedure for you to follow. Click here for instructions:
- MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data
- The core component of an automated system.
- The basis for online catalogs and shared cataloging. All functional modules interact with bibliographic data.
- Quality and consistent MARC records are key
- Sources include: Library of Congress and OCLC - CatExpress
- Barcode Standards
- Codabar ANSI/AIM BC3 Uniform Symbology Specification
- Codabar is a library specific barcode that utilizes a 14 character-numeric label broken down as follows:
- 1st digit – type of barcode. A “2” is a patron, a “3” is a book.
- Digits 2-5 – this four digit number identifies the library.
- Digits 6-13 – this is a unique number that identifies the book or patron.
- Digit 14 is a “check” digit.
