LEARN

Not Just Diverse but Inclusive: Prioritizing Publishers of Color

This workshop will walk you through the steps of finding publishers of color to order from and support. The purpose of this workshop is to present methods as well as discuss the importance of bringing Publishers of Color to the forefront. We’ll also cover tips on knowing when not to purchase books from a publisher and vetting the publishers you find. We’ll look at combatting systems of power and focusing not only on authors of color, but the publishing professionals who work so hard to bring us these stories. The publishers we’ll focus on will range from academic titles, art books, novels, and even children’s books, but the methods can be used for a variety of genres. Registered participants will receive a Zoom link prior to the event via email.

DISCUSS

Once a month, a knowledgeable moderator will guide a Zoom meetup for ULA members on the current month's topic.

June discussion: What hurdles try to stop you from prioritizing publishers of color? How can we move past these challenges?

All year long, ULA members are invited to participate in an open, ongoing discussion in the #edi channel in ULA's Slack workspace. Ask questions, share thoughts, and record your participation in the monthly Take Action challenge. Join the discussion.

TAKE ACTION

Look beyond the "Big 5."

Challenge: This month, make a choice to expand your usual collection development and purchasing procedures to include BIPOC publishers. Post publishers of interest in the Slack #edi discussion.

Bonus challenge: Check your library for the publishers in the lists above. Did you discover holes in your collection's representation? Share your findings on Slack.
